How to make a Kimekomi doll

Costumes, molds or number of times of caving, every method is faithful to traditional techniques. All the bodies of dolls are made of paulownia tree and chemical materials such as ethyl carbonate are never used.

Traditional techniques of Mataro Dolls

1.Molding

The mold of dolls is made of clay. Place the mold in the container and pour resin into it to make the foundation of dolls. This foundation is called "kama". In traditional way of making, doll makers make front part and back part.

Stuck mold, which is the mixture of paint color and shofu glue into "kama" and make the body of dolls. Then, make the two parts together and form the body.

Pull out the body from "kama" and fix the surface with bamboo stick.

After dried the body for a while, file the body perfectly.


5.Painting parish white powder

Paint whiting powder on to the body. This work makes easier to carve lines of kimekomi, and also prevents losing its shape.

Carve lines after the powder dried. This work affects on the result, therefore it has to be done carefully.


7.Putting cloth into the body

Put glue into carves, then put cloth into the body and stuck the costume to the body.

Paint the face with thin brush. This is the final and the most important part of making dolls.

Put hands and heads to the bodies and brush the hair.
