What is the origin of the Children's day?

War armor by Icchu

Children's day, also known as Tango no sekku (the seasonal festival of May 5th), was an important event of Heian aristocrats. On the day, people put Iris Flowers and Yomogi in the house to drive away evil spirits.

Warrior dolls

Japanese word for Iris is "Sho-bu", which pronounced same as the Japanese word for martialism. Therefore the Children's day became a festival for boys and that's why the warrior dolls are decorated on the day.

It is said that the custom to decorate warrior dolls and carp streamers began in Edo period.
