What do the strings on top of the carp streamer mean?
The 5 colors of strings each have a meaning.
- Blue: Spring, Trees, and East
- Red: Summer, Fire, and South
- Yellow: Canicular days, Earth, Center
- White: Fall, Gold, and West
- Black: Winter, Water, and North
This came from theory of Yin-Yang and the five elements. In Yin-Yang, it is thought that universe is a cycle of those five elements.
Why are those carps are family?
Usually the father carp is black, mother is red and the child is blue. In Yin-Yang way of thinking, each color shows the image of paternal, maternal and youth.
