This decoration represents a role of kabuki play parent-child lions. The father lion pushes its offspring into valley floor in order to try its limit of courage. The lion is often called the king of beasts, thus peony flowers, also called the king of flowers in East Asia are printed on the costumes.
Why are red and white considered lucky in Japan?
There are various opinions (for example: both of colors imply life and death
of human being) to explain it, thought the actual reason is not clear.
Bright contrasts of colors have been preferred in Japan from long time ago.
